Matthew 9:27–34
There are moments God plants in you that don’t feel like much at the time, yet they shape everything that comes after. In 2007, before I ever preached a sermon or understood who I would become, I was a young believer trying to find my footing. I was hungry, broken, learning Scripture for the first time, and holding onto mentors who helped carry me through those early months. Right before I moved to the next phase of my discipleship program, I asked one of those mentors for a final word of wisdom. I wanted something deep, something profound, something I could build my life on. He looked at me, paused, and delivered a truth so simple I almost rejected it.
“Jesus. Is. Everything.”
I didn’t appreciate it then. I thought it was too basic. Too small. Too obvious. But eighteen years later, I understand what he was really handing me. He wasn’t giving me a cliché. He was pointing me toward the center of the entire Christian life. The older I get, the more I realize how right he was. Everything begins with Jesus. Everything depends on Jesus. Everything finds meaning in Jesus. Everything is held together by Jesus.
This passage in Matthew reminds us exactly why.
As Jesus walked through Capernaum, two blind men followed behind Him crying out for mercy. A few moments later, He touched their eyes and sight exploded into their world. Minutes after that, a demon-oppressed man who could not speak was brought to Him. The demon fled. The man spoke. The crowd erupted in awe. And within the same hour, the religious leaders accused Jesus of working by demonic power. One town. One day. One crowd. Yet radically opposite responses to the same Jesus.
What happened in Capernaum wasn’t a quiet religious moment. It was the Kingdom of God colliding with a broken world. It was heaven shaking the dust of a blue-collar fishing village. Ordinary people watched blind eyes open, demons run, and a mute tongue speak for the first time. Children tugged at their parents. Families shouted. Neighbors argued. Questions filled the air.
Who is this man?
Where does His power come from?
Could He really be the One we’ve waited for?
Jesus is greater than every past story.
When the crowd cried out, “Never was anything like this seen in Israel,” they weren’t exaggerating. Israel had a history full of miracles. The sea split for Moses. Bread fell from heaven. Fire consumed water at Mount Carmel. Giants fell before David. Prophets called down rain and confronted kings. Israel had seen God move again and again.
But Jesus wasn’t just another chapter in Israel’s story. He was the Author stepping onto the page. When He said, “Before Abraham was, I am,” He wasn’t giving a poetic statement. He was declaring Himself the eternal One. Greater than Moses. Greater than Elijah. Greater than every miracle, every victory, and every story in their past.
If Jesus was greater than Israel’s history, then He is greater than your history. Your past may be loud, messy, or complicated, but Jesus stands above all of it. He isn’t intimidated by where you’ve been. He isn’t limited by what happened. He isn’t bound by your failures or your victories. Jesus is greater, and Jesus is everything.
Jesus is greater than every present struggle.
Capernaum wasn’t glamorous. It was a small town full of fishermen repairing nets, farmers counting crops, and families wrestling with the weight of Roman oppression. They knew sickness. They knew fear. They knew uncertainty. They knew spiritual warfare.
Jesus didn’t wait for their circumstances to improve. He walked straight into their chaos. He stepped into their pain. He brought healing, clarity, authority, and hope. He reminded them, and reminds us, of a truth that cannot bend: “Take heart; I have overcome the world.”
Your present struggle does not intimidate Him.
Your pain does not overwhelm Him.
Your fears do not threaten Him.
Your addictions and anxieties are not final.
Jesus has already overcome everything that tries to break you. He doesn’t say He might win someday. He declares He already has.
Jesus is greater than every future fear.
Israel lived under the shadow of Rome. Taxes climbed. Violence lingered. Whispers of war spread. Families wondered if tomorrow would be worse than today. Fear of the future ran deep.
Yet Jesus gave them a truth strong enough to anchor every generation: “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”
He doesn’t shift with culture.
He doesn’t weaken with time.
He doesn’t change when the world does.
Your future may hold uncertainty. This world may shake. Wars may rise. Economies may fail. Sickness may strike. But none of those things outweigh the One who holds your tomorrows in His hands. If Jesus is everything, then fear loses its authority over your life. If Jesus is everything, then your future is secure. If Jesus is everything, then you can stand boldly in a world that feels unstable.
Everything you could gain will fade.
Everything you cling to will eventually break.
Everything you build will someday be dust.
But Jesus remains. Jesus holds. Jesus sustains. Jesus is worth more than anything you could ever lose.
He is everything!
